Hi, my name is Elio!

I'm a curiousEngineer Softwarewho tries to explaincomputer sciencein a simpler waysimple, starting from real questions and things we use every day.

I write abouttechandpersonal growth, tobetter understandhow they work and help others do the same.

What I have understood in the last 10 years

Over the past ten years, I’ve spentmore time learningthanlooking for shortcuts.
And the more I learned, the clearer it becamethat comparing yourself to others says very little about the value of a journey.

From the outside,it seems likeeveryone has aclear path.
From the inside, almost everyone is justlearning how to find their way.

I studied engineering because I wanted to understandhow things worknot because I was chasing a title or a perfect career.

By studying Linux, networks, servers, cybersecurity, software development and cloud computing, I realized that real progress is not aboutknowing more, but aboutthinking better.

One thing however I understood earlybuilding skills without building yourself takes you far, but it doesn’t take you well.

Too many people put their entire identity into their work, hoping that that sooner or later it will be enough.
I have always looked for the opposite, to use study and work as a tool togrowing, explore, become more free, mentallyeven beforeprofessionally.

Over the years I have donemany projects, many have never lefta hard disk (or an SSD).
And that's okay.
Because it’s there that I learned to make mistakeswithout having to prove anything to anyone.

Over time I discovered something I didn’t expect:
explaining what I was learning helped me to understand it better.
And it also helped others not to feel stupid in front of things that are onlyapparentlycomplex.

But I also understood another thing, perhaps the most underestimated: how fundamental it isto know how to communicate.

TheCommunicationis theforcethat moves the world.
A communication mistake can destroy a person’s credibility, just as it can trigger huge conflicts.

But above all, I found out that when you know how tocommunicate better, you learn better.
Shapingyour thoughts, explaining them, putting them in orderhas a value thatis priceless.

Today I work as a Software Engineer, but this space wasn’t created to talk about successes.
It was created to betterunderstandthe world ofcomputer scienceandbuild an extra perspective togetherextrasetand take a moment toreflect.

I write for those who feel that they arebuilding something, even if they don’t yet have aclear map.
For those who love computer science but do not want to become a machine.
For those who want to grow up without stopping living.

I don't have all the answers.
But I havelearned to ask me many questions.

And this iswhereit allbegins.

Why are computer viruses called viruses?

When I was a kid, I often played online, clicked on a little game and... boom. Sudden popups, fake "X" buttons that did not close anything and automatic downloads that you had never requested. The computer began to become slow, improvised, sometimes unusable. Well, I dumped viruses unintentionally. But why are they called viruses?

Whenwe browseanHTTPS website, we aretrusting a digital certificate: it serves to authenticate the site’s identity and protect communication.

The problem is that, at real-world scale (billions of connections per day), understanding how muchthese certificates arereally safeandcompliant with standardsis far from trivial.

Thisprojectwas born, in collaboration with thePolitecnico di Torino, to address this need by providing atool and an architecture for large-scale automated collection and analysis of X.509v3 certificates.

The tool allows extracting insights onsecurity, prevalence, and standards compliance, by analyzingcertificate structure, trust chains, extensions, transparency mechanisms, adherence toguidelinesdefined byRFCand theCA/Browser Forum, andmuch more.
